Anthropic API costs

How to cut your Anthropic (Claude) API costs

How to spend less on the Claude API: the right model per task, caching that pays off, batch jobs, and the long prompt price on Haiku 5.5. Prices and a worked example included.

Last updated

Pick Opus, Sonnet, or Haiku per task

The example here is 6,600 requests a month (300 a working day), about 15,000 tokens in and 1,000 out each. On Sonnet 5.5 at list price that is $264 a month. Opus costs twice as much per token as Sonnet, and Haiku 5.5 costs a twentieth. Use Opus for the hardest work, Sonnet for most of it, and Haiku for short, simple requests.

ModelInputOutputPer month
Claude Opus 5.5$396$132$528
Claude Sonnet 5.5$198$66.00$264
Claude Haiku 5.5$9.90$3.30$13.20
Claude Haiku 4.5$99.00$33.00$132

Make prompt caching pay off

With Claude you mark what to cache. A 5 minute cache write costs 1.25 times the input price, and each read after that costs a twentieth of the input price on Opus and Sonnet 5.5, and a tenth on Haiku. So caching pays as soon as the same start is read again before it expires.

Coding tools resend the same files and instructions on every turn, so a large share of input can come from the cache:

ModelList price70 in 100 input tokens cachedBatch price
Claude Opus 5.5$528$265$264
Claude Sonnet 5.5$264$132$132
Claude Haiku 5.5$13.20$6.96$6.60

Cached rows count cached tokens at the read price and leave out cache writes, so treat them as a floor.

Batch what can wait

The Message Batches API runs jobs within 24 hours at half the standard price for input and output. It fits evals, backfills, and nightly summaries.

Watch the Haiku 5.5 size line and the tokenizer

Haiku 5.5 charges more once a prompt passes 100K tokens, so very long prompts can cost more on Haiku 5.5 than you expect. Anthropic also notes that Claude 4.7 and later count more tokens for the same text than older models, so compare the cost of real tasks when you switch.

Questions

Common questions

Which Claude model is cheapest?
Claude Haiku 5.5 has the lowest list price on October 28, 2026: $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts up to 100K tokens. Above 100K it is $0.50 in and $2.50 out.
Is Claude prompt caching worth it?
When the same long start repeats, usually yes. A cache read costs a tenth or less of the input price, while a 5 minute cache write costs 1.25 times the input price. A cached block that is read at least once after it is written already costs less than sending it twice.
Do newer Claude models use more tokens for the same text?
Anthropic notes that the tokenizer in Claude 4.7 and later models produces more tokens for the same text than older ones. Compare cost per task on your own requests, not only the price per token.
Can FUSR.ai lower my Anthropic bill?
Yes, if you use Anthropic, OpenAI, or xAI API keys. FUSR.ai takes your own keys, picks a model for each request, keeps prompt caching working, and caps spend per key. Your providers bill you directly and FUSR.ai adds nothing to token prices. It does not route to Gemini, and it does not use chat plans like Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus.

Straight talk

What FUSR.ai does and doesn't do

It does

  • Takes your own Anthropic API key, encrypted, and Anthropic bills you at list price.
  • Sends each request to Opus, Sonnet, or Haiku by rules you can read, marks requests for caching, and keeps a chat on the model whose cache is warm.
  • On Pro and Team, caps spend on every key.

It doesn't

  • Work with Claude Pro or Max chat plans. A chat plan is not an API key.
  • Store your prompts. Routing never sees the prompt text.
  • Change what Anthropic charges per token.

Try FUSR.ai with your own API keys.

Connect your Anthropic API key, and FUSR.ai picks Opus, Sonnet, or Haiku per request and caps the key.

Set up from your terminal with npx fusrai setup, or start in the browser.

You bring your own API keys. Chat plans like Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus are separate and FUSR.ai does not use them.
