GPT vs Claude

GPT vs Claude API pricing

OpenAI and Anthropic API prices side by side at each model size, one workload priced on both, and the caching and batch rules that change the real bill.

Prices at each model size

Per million tokens, standard tier, short prompts. Sizes are a rough match by price and how each provider positions the model, not a claim that two models do equally well.

SizeOpenAIAnthropic
LargestGPT-5.5: $5 in, $30 outClaude Opus 5.5: $4 in, $20 out
LargeGPT-6.1 Sol: $2 in, $10 outClaude Sonnet 5.5: $2 in, $10 out
MidGPT-6.1 Terra: $1 in, $5 outClaude Haiku 4.5: $1 in, $5 out
SmallGPT-6 Luna: $0.10 in, $0.50 outClaude Haiku 5.5: $0.10 in, $0.50 out

The same workload on both

The example is 20 million input tokens and 4 million output tokens a month, prompts around 4,000 tokens, at list price.

ModelInputOutputPer month
GPT-5.5$100$120$220
Claude Opus 5.5$80.00$80.00$160
GPT-6.1 Sol$40.00$40.00$80.00
Claude Sonnet 5.5$40.00$40.00$80.00
GPT-6.1 Terra$20.00$20.00$40.00
GPT-5 mini$5.00$8.00$13.00
Claude Haiku 5.5$2.00$2.00$4.00
GPT-6 Luna$2.00$2.00$4.00

Caching and batch rules differ

OpenAI caches repeated prompt starts on its own and charges nothing to write the cache. Anthropic caches what you mark, charges 1.25 times the input price to write a 5 minute cache, then a twentieth of the input price per read on Opus and Sonnet 5.5. Both run batch jobs at half the standard price.

Here is the same workload with half the input cached, and in batch:

ModelList price50 in 100 input tokens cachedBatch price
GPT-5.5$220$175$110
Claude Opus 5.5$160$122$80.00
GPT-6.1 Sol$80.00$61.00$40.00
Claude Sonnet 5.5$80.00$61.00$40.00
GPT-6.1 Terra$40.00$30.50$20.00
GPT-5 mini$13.00$10.75$6.50
Claude Haiku 5.5$4.00$3.10$2.00
GPT-6 Luna$4.00$3.10$2.00

Claude cached rows leave out cache writes, so treat them as a floor.

The fine print

You do not have to choose one

Many teams keep both keys: one provider for most work and the other where it does better. Ways to lower each bill are in cut your OpenAI API costs and cut your Anthropic API costs.

Prices as of

List prices in US dollars per million tokens, standard tier, read from each provider's own pricing page. Providers change prices, so check the source before you set a budget. FUSR.ai connects Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI keys. Google prices are here to compare; FUSR.ai does not route to Gemini.

Questions

Common questions

Is Claude or GPT cheaper on the API?
It depends on the size you need. On October 28, 2026, Claude Opus 5.5 costs less per token than GPT-5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol have the same list price, and the smallest models from both are within a few cents of each other per million tokens.
Do Claude and GPT count tokens the same way?
No. Each uses its own tokenizer, so the same text can be a different number of tokens. Compare the cost of real tasks, not only the price per token.
Where do these prices come from?
From each provider's own pricing page, read on October 28, 2026: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and xAI. Every table on this page links its source and shows that date. Prices change, so check the provider's page before you commit to a budget.
Can FUSR.ai use both?
Yes, if you use Anthropic, OpenAI, or xAI API keys. FUSR.ai takes your own keys, picks a model for each request, keeps prompt caching working, and caps spend per key. Your providers bill you directly and FUSR.ai adds nothing to token prices. It does not route to Gemini, and it does not use chat plans like Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus.

Straight talk

What FUSR.ai does and doesn't do

It does

  • Takes your OpenAI and Anthropic API keys, and reaches both from one base URL.
  • Picks GPT or Claude per request by rules you can read.
  • Leaves billing with your providers, at list price.

It doesn't

  • Work with ChatGPT or Claude chat plans. A chat plan is not an API key.
  • Store your prompts. Routing never sees the prompt text.
  • Rank models on quality. Test on your own work.

Try FUSR.ai with your own API keys.

Connect both API keys, and FUSR.ai picks GPT or Claude for each request.

Set up from your terminal with npx fusrai setup, or start in the browser.

You bring your own API keys. Chat plans like Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus are separate and FUSR.ai does not use them.
